So far the 2010 World Cup in South Africa has its fair share of controversy on and off the pitch. One of the most talked about subject of this World Cup is the Vuvuzela. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Vuvuzela, it is basically a long plastic blowing trumpet which produces a loud and often irritating sound. The vuvuzela is mainly used in soccer matches in South Africa.

New for the iPhone is the Vuvuzela iPhone app which is based on this fun but controversial instrument. This novelty iPhone app basically mimics the sound of the Vuvuzela but unlike the actual Vuvuzela which measure to almost one meter, this app can be concealed and taken anywhere with your iPhone. Blow your digital horns in a sports bar, at a party or even at a stadium during a live soccer match. Even though the Vuvuzela iPhone app doesn’t have the 127 decibel audio impact of the real instrument, this app will definitely make you the center of attention if played in your proximity.
Basically, this iPhone app features an image of the Vuvuzela which can be changed into ten different color schemes. A simple tap on the various jerseys surrounding the Vuvuzela image will alter its color instantly. Other than that, there are several rotating advertisements on the screen.

Sadly, this iPhone app can become quite boring and repetitive since its only function is to imitate the sound of a Vuvuzela. Even though it does not pack the acoustic impact of the original Vuvuzela, it can still be irritating at times. Maybe if the Vuvuzela can be played with various tones instead of that single monotonous buzzing tone, this app could be more interesting.
Ironically, although there have been quite a few complaints about this instrument, the Vuvuzela iPhone app has been selling quite well with more than one million downloads since its launch. Novelty iPhone apps such as the Vuvuzela iPhone app and the virtual Zippo Lighter app have a tendency to be popular in a short period of time. Plus, the World Cup being the most watched sporting event in the world only adds to the popularity of this simple iPhone app.
