Doodle Jump App Review

Price$0.99/£0.59

Rating4.5/5

Doodle Jump has scarcley left the top 10 of the iTunes charts since it was created in April of 2009. The game consists of a small, unknown creature, which has been doodled onto a piece of squared paper. The aim is to get the creature as high up the page as possible, by jumping upon platforms without falling. You control the “Doodler” by tilting the iPhone or iPod, which is one of the few apps which uses the motion sensor to it’s full capabilities.

However, the game is not as simple as it may seem. As you climb further up the page, you will find many obstacles stand in your way. You may face the broken platforms, the disappearing platforms or a host of alien creatures ready to abduct your Doodler. You can defend yourself against these aliens by shooting, which can be done by simply tapping the screen in the direction you wish to shoot in. There is also a host of different upgrades to collect on your way up, such as a Jetpack, Propeller Hat and Trampolines. Here is a full table of platforms and upgrades.

Colour Action
Green Most common platform. Remains unchanged once jumped upon
Gray Platform constantly moves up and down
Yellow to Red Blows up after a few seconds
Blue Plaform constantly moves from side to side
Brown Cracks as soon as jumped on
Dark Blue Can be moved around by player. Turns into a green platform when jumped on.
White Disappears after being jumped on.
Power Up Function
Jetpack Shoots the player up at high speeds for a few seconds
Propeller hat Same a jetpack however Doodler travels much slower
Spring Increases the jumping distance when jumped on top of
Trampoline Same as the spring however it propells Doodler further
Spring shoes Same as springs but they become attached to the Doodler for 3 jumps
The Orb/ Force shield Makes the Doodler briefly invulnerable to monsters
The Rocket (only in space theme) Propels the Doodler high up at very high speeds. This is more powerful than the jetpack but is less common.

Overall the game is easily one of the best available for the iPhone and iPod. It is often talked about as the only contender to Angry Birds for the best app produced for the iPod since it’s creation. Of course, if you have 99c/59p to spare, you would be foolish to look anywhere else except for Doodle Jump to spend it on.
